You Are Allowed To Slow Down
Why rest and self care belong inside a disciplined life
We live in a culture obsessed with optimization.
Wake earlier. Work harder. Train harder. Answer faster. Build more. Become more.
And somehow we’re supposed to meditate peacefully about all of it.
Relax was created around a different idea:
A meaningful life doesn’t have to be lived at maximum speed
Slowing down isn’t abandoning ambition.
Sometimes slowing down is exactly what allows you to sustain it.
Rest isn’t the opposite of discipline
If discipline means caring for the life you’re building, recovery belongs inside discipline.
Your body needs sleep. Muscles need recovery. Your mind needs periods without constant stimulation. Relationships need presence. Creativity needs empty space.
You weren’t designed to produce every waking second.
Rest doesn’t have to be earned by reaching complete exhaustion first.
Self care can be incredibly ordinary
Self-care has become synonymous with expensive skincare and spa days.
Those things can be lovely.
But some of the most meaningful forms of self-care aren’t particularly photogenic.
Going to bed. Cooking yourself dinner. Taking a shower. Putting your phone down. Stretching. Drinking water. Cleaning your environment. Sitting outside. Making tea. Saying no to something you don’t have the capacity for. Letting yourself exist for an hour without turning the hour into an opportunity for productivity.
That’s care too.
Create rituals that bring you home
You don’t need a three hour morning routine.
Choose a few rituals that signal to your body that it is allowed to soften.
Light the candle. Make the tea. Put on comfortable clothes. Stretch. Journal. Take the long shower. Open the windows. Walk without tracking anything. Sit somewhere beautiful without immediately photographing it.
Your life isn’t only the milestones you’re working toward.
It’s also this Tuesday evening. This glass of water. This dinner. This sunset coming through your window.
Don’t become so obsessed with building your future that you disappear from your present.
Relax reminder:
Slow down enough to actually experience the life you’re working so hard to create.
